Horse Sense Explained
Horse sense is something that is acquired by being around horses for many years, otherwise it needs to be learned. Horse sense is about learning to understand your horse. It is learning to read your horse’s expressions and ear positions and what they mean. Horse sense is learning when to stand close to your horse and when to move away and why. Horse sense is about knowing when to give your horse respect and teaching him to respect you. Horses have a flight instinct and sometimes they move unexpectedly and very quickly. Horse sense can help you to stay safe so you don’t suddenly get knocked over, stood on or kicked if a horse takes fright. This knowledge will be made available to you throughout the pages.
Look for the Reason
With real horse sense and understanding a wonderful and unique partnership is often formed between horse and rider. Some reasons for a rider to fear and lack confidence are -
Having had or watched a serious accident
Riding a horse unsuited to the rider’s ability
The horse not being properly trained to be friendly
and respectful
Being new to horse riding and handling and
not understanding horse sense
In the picture at the top of this page you’ll see my horse Flame, friendly and relaxed, enjoying the company of a young confident lad. Horses are very much in tune with the feelings and actions of their rider and handler. If the rider is confident then a well- trained horse will feel that confidence and be relaxed and obedient. You can overcome fear, no matter what the cause. Knowledge, training, safe horse riding gear, teaching your horse to accept spooky objects and true horse sense will all help you to enjoy your horse and riding experience.
Train Your Horse
As you become more familiar with horses and horse sense you will realise that horses are not just bad. That includes your horse. Bad behaviour is a result of poor or no training or possible abuse in some way. The following pages will explain how you can teach your horse to accept spooky objects and be calm and relaxed. How to have a horse that is happy, obedient, yielding to pressure and much, much more will be revealed. Understanding these things along with horse sense and learning how to communicate with your horse will help you to be a confident rider and truly enjoy your horse experience.
